When should i and how should i tell him? |
i am moving to another state with my guy and i have a good job where i am living now. my boss is expanding his company and very reliant on me, how do i tell him i am leaving and i am not going unrtil sept. so when should i tell him? Tell him immediately and just tell him. He may be disappointed but if he's an ok boss he'll understand. This gives him more time to get used to the idea and to get a replacement in and trained. Some may say there is a slight risk he'll get mad and fire you, but this seems really unlikely (but if you think it is possible you could hold off - still I think its better to trust him and tell him). Besides, with 3 months before the move this gives plenty of time for a well handled transition. Schedule some time to speak wiht him explain that your guy is moving and that you are going with him and does he think that you could possibly work for him from there. Show him some respect and let him know that you appreciate all he has done for you and taught you while under his employ. You never know but give him time to hire and have you train someone. He should be appreciative of that, good luck in your upcoming move as well. I'd tell him ASAP so there is time to hire someone and train them to replace you. Tell your boss at the earliest opportunity, so he has the time to look for someone else. It's nice that he is relying on you, but your own life has to come first. The best thing you can do is give him time to find a replacement, and you can then be there to train the person. This will show your professionalism, and ensure your boss will give you a great reference as and when you need it in future. I would let him know now. Maybe, he can get you to train the person to take your job to be as good as you. Tell him as soon as possible. That gives him a chance to find, hire and train your replacement. In the meantime, start writing your procedures, if you haven't already done so. Honesty is the best policy.... Have you begun training someone to succeed you in your role? If you haven't then telling the boss sooner will be the best idea. Your boss will be able to have more time to find the right candidate to replace you. In addition it will help your boss decide whether to continue with the expansion or not. Good luck! |
