Promotion with one problem...I can't stand my soon-to-be boss? |
I have applied for a different position at my current employment and I got!!! I will get more money, and more opportunity-Only problem is- my new boss is a smart-*** and thinks I applied for the receptionist position (I have to remind him to do things the next day, take messages, etc) He is also demanding in a very rude way (I don't have a problem with a demanding boss but it's the way he goes about requesting me to do something) I am human and although he is my superior I believe that theres a nice way he can ask me to complete a project. I need suggestions on how to handle my relationship with my boss-also I'm a 25 year old woman - could this be the reason? Kill the grumpy git with fake kindness . Load your tone with sarcasm. Put on your smarmiest fakest smile , Do your job well and dont have any form of social interaction , dont try and make him like you. I assume that you knew that this individual would be your boss before you applied for the promotion. So you need to just deal with it. Not every boss will make your job easy and make requests in a nice fashion. He may be testing you, he may not be comfortable with you, or he may just be a jerk. So what if he doesn't ask nicely. This is real life now, and everything isn't all nicey nicey in the real world. Show him that you are capable of doing the job and ensure that what he asks gets done -- whether you do it or delegate it. In the real world, you have to deal with unpleasant people -- coworkers, customers, etc. -- all the time in a professional way. When I was 25, it was difficult not to take it all personally, but that is the key. Professional demeanor means that you do your job as well as you know how and let the boss' rudeness roll off. There is NO way to "handle" somebody like you describe. You have no right to correct someone else's behavior, and short of making a formal complaint of harrassment or unethical business behavior, you have no recourse. Grow a very thick skin...quickly. I would sit down with him and tell him how he comes off when he requests you to do something. Request from him that he asks you to do something in a different tone/way. Most bosses will respect that. If you can't communicate with the bad bosses that you run into then you will have to just live in missery. have a Dry sense of humor, be rude back if you can, they love that, also watch the movie 9-5 about a hundred times LOL \o/ |
