Should financial mangers in nonprofit organizations be compensated equally to their counterpart? |
in profit-seeking firms? why? Non profits have to pay comparable to "for profit" companies, otherwise they will lose good people. Should they, you ask. No one pays more than they have to so I would say that if you are working for a non profit and are not being paid what you think the market will bear then you should look around for something else. if they're doing the same (equivalent) job as their for profit counterparts they should receive the same compensation If they are really dedicated to the cause they may be persuaded to receive a smaller compensation and donate the rest of their salary to the cause (as a tax write-off) but it should be their choice and not forced upon them In a perfect world, yes, they should be compensated equally. However, there's a great divide of nonprofit and for-profit...PROFIT, which enables for-profits to pay much higher salaries. Do I think nonprofit employees do more valuable work? Absolutely. Does their pay reflect it? Not even close, but maybe someday people will start to realize the really important things in life and the pay scale will balance out. I have worked with and for non-profit agencies -- MANY of which get paid the same as comparable "for profit" companies. I worked in the Acct department cutting checks, so I know. Grant it, you may have some smaller non-profit companies that may rely on many volunteers... but many of their execs are still well paid. Work experiance. |
