What is a good entry role into an investment bank?

I have been asked to be specific about the sort of role I would like. I was looking at a back office role but where do I start?

You really are lucky if the bank is asking you to define your own job !

Most places they decide what the jobs are in advance and then recruit people to fit those vacancies.
It would help if we had more details. Have you thought of
Coutts ?
I started in the back office doing administration work. It is the quickest way in. You communicate with many different departments and get to know people. This is what benefits you when you apply for better vacancies.
Well if you have a degree you'd want to be a data analyst.
An administrative assistant would suit someone who is experienced. There must also be roles for school leavers also to train with the company and develop.

Those are the sorts of roles you'd expect in an investment bank, plus tax analysts and project executives and all sorts of other people.

I'd advise you to see this link: http://www.prospects.ac.uk/cms/showpage/...

It may or may not be relevant depending on your skills, but it gives you an interesting overview of the market and people you will have to work with.
You can also truncate back to finance and management consultancy (if you see what I mean).
