Tell me everything I need to know about becoming a financial advisor.? |
Perhaps for a company like Merrill Lynch or the like. First I would say you would have to be interested in finances. Next I would say read as much as you can. Suze Orman has several great books out that break it down. Go to the library and read, read, read!! Nothing is worse than when you have an uneducated financial advisor that doesn't even know how to handle their own money. Anyway, good luck and make sure you do your research! Many financial advisors are certified financial planners. This designation is something that many employers and clients look for in someone to manage money for others. The complete list of requirements is at the attached link. http://www.cfp.net/ Go to theamericancollege.edu. They offer the educational requirements to become CFP certified. In the interim, while you are putting in your three years experience, you can obtain the ChFC. This program contains the courses required for CFP plus 2. In order to become certified, the CFP board increased their requirements to include having a Bachelor's degree. You can't escape the fact that being a financial planner requires education. There is a lot of sales and networking involved but ultimately when you have a client sitting in front of you, you need to know finance. If you don't know that, you can't make proper recommendations. Not making proper recommendations will lead to distrust and distrust will lead to a lean business. Education would be the substance behind good networking and social skills. Ron, ChFC A Financial Adviser for companies like Merrill Lynch does not require CFP designation. You have to take and pass Series 7 and 65. Since most of the responsibility would be to sell company's products rather than actually provide financial advice for clients. Keep in mind it is mostly a sales job. Cold calling, Meeting quota. Collect commissions. If you are considering becoming a financial adviser on your own, then Series 65 is a must. CFP would greatly enhance your knowledge. To learn more about how you can register to take these exams go to http://www.nasaa.org/home/index.cfm... For exam prep material http://www.passthe7.com/ http://www.passthe65.com/ or check out amazon.com. Best wishes. go to learntosucceed.biz Great career consulting. I bought their materials and got the phone number to their advice line. I talked to the author and he was very helpful. He is a Wall Street pro so he might be able to help you. He answered my questions when I went into my new job(insurance). The materials are really helpful-stuff they don't teach in school. Also the price for everything is about $30 Good Luck Just went through the whole job screening process to be an FA.It is pretty tough...I learned a lot from being to 4 interviews at the same company.I made it to the final round, met every one that works at that particular office and spoke to a lot of people who have been in the business for 10-20 years. They require 3 licenses at the beginning. Then you have to be out there building your own network of clients....they give you 2 years. After that period you have to start bringing a certain amount a year, averaging b/n 8-10 million of assets depending on the company. The job requires lots of cold calling, footwork and a 24-hour effort to build business.Everyone told me that it is very hard to get started but once you establish your customer base....then you can breathe easier...Anyway,...it sounds extremely exciting, pretty much you are the one that decided your own fate...Hard work pays off...Good luck! |
