Will taking a few months off work/"career break" affect my future career prospects? |
I am in my mid 20's and have a pretty good and progessing career in finance. I am wondering if taking a few months (unpaid) career break to travel, will damage my future job oppotunities once I return from my trip and look for another job? What do employers think of people taking a few months off to travel? Is it alright? It's generally not a problem unless you have a spotty work history before your break. Then it looks like a weak cover story to mask prolonged unemployment. Source(s): 12 years of recruiting and HR work. its okay, just br truthful with them I personally think that it is alright....I think you just need to be totally honeest with your next employer. Tell them about your travels and what you learned and how it makes you a better candidate for that position. If you are in finance, go to other countries and while you are there study there finance systems....This could be a huge assest if you position it the right way. At your age it should not be a problem. Make sure that you put in two weeks notice before quitting. Be direct on your resume or cover letter after that. Tell them about the gap and offer proof if requested. You can show them your passport with the stamp (dated) from the country you entered or the VISA stamp as proof in interviews if you find that they don't believe you. |
