How does one become a financial planner?

what degree will i need, time frame, expense, anything else?

if you are a financial planner,,advice? thx

States have different licensing requirements for financial planner. Some only requires that you register with the state, pass Series 65 or 66 exams http://www.nasaa.org/home/index.cfm... Although CFP is recommended, but it is not always required. That is why most publications are strongly suggesting buyers be aware to only work with those who has CFP credential.

Going back to your question regarding a degree that might help put you on the path. A college degree in general business administration, finance, accounting, taxation, economics would all be in the right area.

Best wishes.
You can always start out with a degree in finance and go from there. That way, if the financial planning thing doesn't work out, you always have your degree to fall back on (banking career, etc).

Keep in mind that financial planners typically deal with total needs planning so you will want to get a base in finance, insurance, securities, etc.

I would recommend going here: http://www.kaplanfinancial.com/kfs/index...

You will find lots of good information (click the CFP link on the left).
The certification for a CFP is a lengthy process. After your college degree you sit for three day long examinations which cover all phases of finance. Few pass on the first tries.

An alternative is what I am as a Personal Financial Analyst with Primerica Financial Services.
