What is "building society reference number" ?

fillin out a form to send to employer and in the payment details section, its asks for "building society reference number". im confused

Yes, it is a long number with digits - no letters!

If you have any doubt, ask your Building Society for confirmation - you would not want the money going into the wrong account!
If you have a BUilding Society Account - you will also have a reference number.
If you just have a Bank Account leave that bit blank
If you have a cheque book account with a bank or building society, you do not need to enter anything here. If you want your wages to be paid into a building society savings book account, you'll find the reference number in your account book.
Usually a long number on your account details about 11 digits long with letters in it!
