I am half spanish and half italian. My last name is lopez. I just graduated college and? |
have applied to a few jobs. I have a degree in finance and have an exceptional resume honor student deans list and all. My friend and I applied to the same compnay I have a much better resume than him and better work experience. His last name is berstein and he got the job. I am much smarter and have a more outgoing personality. I feel that I did not even get a call because my last name was spanish. If I had a white person last name it would be different. Should I change my last name to my moms which is Senatore??? I feel that I will get feedback and letters of interest if I change it. WHAT DO YOU THINK HELP????????????? What can I say? Your friend is Jewish and they tend to be financial geniuses. Seriously, reading your question saddens me because it reminds me of what still goes on in this country. Is it your opinion that your resume is better or can that be substantially proven that your's really is better? Was his presentation in the resume better? You can have better qualifications in everything, but miss the target with a sloppy resume. Did you customize the resume and cover letter to the job you were applying for? Perhaps the employer felt you were too qualified for the job, like they wanted someone who could be developed and molded into what they wanted. Also, while you and your friend submitted resumes to the same employer, your individual resumes could have been reviewed by two different people (especially if it's a large organization). Nonetheless, DO NOT CHANGE YOUR NAME. That's who you are, your identity. Do this instead: -Look at your resume and, using resume books and websites (or your school's career center), see how it can be improved. You're young and relatively "new" to resumes, so there is probably room for improvement. -Remember to customize the resume that exhibits the specific qualifications the employer is looking for. -Include a customized cover letter. -Be sure to indicate in the cover letter that you'll be in touch with the employer in the next week or two weeks. Don't do this if the employer specifically says no phone calls or e-mails. Good luck!So you change your last name and get more feedback and interest and when they bring you in to be interviewed, then you don't get the job because its obvious you're not white (or in this case, possibly white and jewish?). If you speak Spanish and/or Italian or any other languages, is that listed on your resume? If a company has largely a white older client base than that could affect their hiring strategy. Be who you are, be proud of it and work for a company that will appreciate your ethnicity and diversity. Spend your time in a positive manner, finding out who the hiring manager is and contacting them directly to let them know of your interest. Who knows, maybe you should contact your friend and see if they are still hiring for that or other positions within that company. Then if you happen to interview, you can see for yourself what the situation is. And I know its easier said than done but Be Positive! u got into a college based on race probably, so what comes around goes around. ps - senatore sounds spanish, too. any really, are you sure you are better in all ways, including that your intvw went better? maybe you used 18 question marks on your resume and got denied that way?????????????????? And how do you know that? they guy who intervied you said?: nahh i dont like spanish names... because i can think as well that guy got the job because has jewish surname... |
