How do you ask for a better raise, when you just received a raise? Generally, the time to make a case for getting a raise is when your boss tells you what your raise will be. But, if you feel at some point in the near future that you deserve another raise, put all your facts together and sit down with your boss to talk about a raise of the raise. Don't be surprised if the talk doesn't succeed though. Boss might even say that he/she agrees with you, but the % raise that you got was the most that he/she was allowed by his/her boss to give you. I guess you go in and explain why you feel you deserve a better raise. Have you really contributed that much to the growth of your company in the last year? You need some data to support your request for more money. Do other people in your position get more? Check out salaries online for your area and print it out. I had the same thing happen to me last year. I was granted the standard increase rate given to everyone but I had gone above and beyond all year. I calmed down after my review for a day or two then I gathered examples of my deeds and carefully planned what I wanted to say and how I would make my point heard. At the end my boss agreed to take it up with her bosses. After about 4 months a much higher raise came through. Don't threaten to quit unless you are really prepared to do so. In my case I was asked point blank if I was planning on doing that. I was honest when I said that the thought hadn't ever crossed my mind. Good luck! |
