Career Q: If I pass all 3 levels of CFA, is it possible for me to..?

move from an operations role in an asset management company to a different role (eg. portfolio management) ?

If it's difficult to do so, what's the point of taking the CFA exams? will it help me move into management then?

taking and passing all three levels of the CFA is no joke, so it certainly would boost your prospects of becoming a portfolio manager.

If you only have ops experience though, a CFA would probably help you to get a job as an analyst or an assistant portfolio manager - the CFA will certainly teach you a lot, but it's not like passing the CFA gives you the knowledge that msot people get from working on that side for many years.
well from what I have seen in most Asset management companies and big banks is that If you have an inside contact ,it becomes infinitely easier for anyone to get any job. Since you are already inside, see if it is possible for you to talk to someone who plays a big role in hiring people in port management, make friends with the person and then ask them the same question...If they say yes it would, then tell them that you plan to do so..That way, they will see that you are serious and driven to make the career change and once u pass the CFA, they will be some what obligated to consider you since they are the one who gave u the advice.
The CFA exam is serious stuff. If you want to move into management the CFA is not the right option for you, I would suggest an MBA. You can get an MBA and concenrate in Finance if you wish. The difference between the CFA and an MBA is that a CFA is a stamp of appoval similar to the CPA. Their are three levels of the test each contains questions about ethics, accounting and finance etc.. An MBA is a Masters Degree which teaches you how to make critical business decisions as well as deal with people.
An MBA is also transferable across industries. Ten years from now if you decide you want to get a job in Information Technology your decision making skills will hold up while having a CFA will not do you any good.
