As far as waitressing is concerned.. how tough is it?

I'm wondering how tough is a waitressing job? What do you have to deal with? Can you even move by the time you get home? How can you carry those gigantic trays full of dishes WITH ONE HAND??

haha looking for a waitressing job -- perhaps someplace like chilis, applebees, tgif, etc

waitressing isn't that tough, but some days are worse than others. it can be frustrating dealing with rude customers, selfish co-workers and managers that don't back you up. you have to remember a lot of stuff at once, and you are constantly running around.

however, it does have it's benefits. usually your co-workers are very fun and social, you do occasionally have NICE people at your tables, the money can be good if you give good service, the hours are flexible and you don't need a degree or even experience at some places.

you can move when you get home, in my experience a lot of servers go out after their shifts, and you get used to carrying the trays with one hand (it's all about balance).

waitressing is the toughest right after you start, but after a week or two you get a hang of it. usually the big chain restaurants have pretty involved training classes and only let you take one or two table at a time during your first few shifts to help you ease into it. also, the key is to be nice to EVERYONE you work with, that will make your job A LOT easier. bussers will bus your tables faster, the kitchen won't lose your orders, the bartenders will make your drinks faster, other servers will be willing to run your food when you're not around or grab an extra coke for table 12, etc. if you have a bad attitude, your job will suck. so be nice to everyone.
The MOST trying thing about waitressing is dealing with customers ALL DAY everyday. Sometimes being a people person on your worst days is tough.

It also depends on the establishment. Your boss and coworkers could be wonderful making it easier, or they could be absolutely wretched and demanding.

You get used to the heavy trays.
When you do waitressing. It's more than waiting tables you're also cleaning stations and have other duties too.

The biggest complaint I've ever had was that customers just don't understand what it is like to be a server or in the service industry. They think it's so darn easy. "just order the darn thing and put it on my table". But you have, like, 5 other tables and you have to remember what goes where, take everything in the right order to the right table at the right times without spilling, losing balance, or allowing your food to get cold.

It all depends on where you work. Either way, you SHOULD just give it a try. You may like it or not, but you'll appreciate it.
its not that bad its kinda fun
Try to land a job at a new place opening up. They have lots of training and will work with newbies.
Restaurant work is really hard but great fun.
