Bartender Question?

I want to become a bartender in VA. I am of age (30) I've looked into the most popular bartending school here. I would like to know how bartenders do with wages/tips...espescially here in a big city in VA? Also, what sorts of people make good bartenders? I just want to know if I have what it takes before I go and spend $500 on a school. Thanks!

I have never, ever worked in a bar that has hired someone out of a bar tending school. I know people that have gone to them, but they didn't start out as bartenders. Money in bars/clubs is really good, but most of the people that work in those places have been throwing drinks for a couple of years. Don't buy into what the bar tending school is telling you, $500 is way to much for a school that is going to teach you how to cut fruit and pour colored water. Source(s): 10 years pouring drinks
im actually getting ready to start bartening school too (in baltimore). you can make $300+ a night and more on weekend nights. it depends where you work. if its a dive bar where people are only spending $10 at a time on cheap beer, you're gonna hafta worker harder and longer for the same amount of tips you would get in a place that sells EACH drink for $10. even if you make crappy drinks though, if you can entertain the people at your bar, you'll make good money. learn a few bar tricks (type 'bar tricks' into google and you'll get instructions for some) and be talkative and happy all the time. youll do fine!
Don't waste your money on bartenfding school. Work your way up. Get a job waiting tables at a local joint and then once you ahve been there awhile tell them that you would like to be a bartender, and that you would be willing to work off hours (weekday at lunch) to pay your dues.

Then after a year or so ask for better shifts (weekend nights) or take your experience and go to another restaurant.

If you're hot or have a relly nice rack (or at least know how to show off what you do have) you will make good tips as either a waitress or a bartender. Also, studies show that casual touches (on the shoulder, hand or arm, can raise your tips by 50%) Make $150 a night rather than $100.
Good luck.
Bartending School is a big waste of time and money.

The only way in to a good bar is working your way up because nobody hires bartenders. All the better bars will promote from within.

The bartender will make or break the restaurant so you have to be a proven preformer to land the job. Best way to learn is to get a copy of Cunningham's bar guide and make yourself some drink flashcards. Study them while you are a barback and soon you too will be on the bar.

There only way to avoid this is to have a smokin' hot bod and a new bar opening. The corporate places always over hire for washouts so that can be the way to working yourself in without going up the ladder. It's very hard and won't get you the respect you will need from your co-workers but if you can't see yourself as a barback I think it's your best bet.
dont go to bartending school!!!!!

i am only 21 and i started bartending on bourbon street in new orleans last year when i moved out there... i had no idea what i was doing but everyone told me not to go to bartending school. alot of those schools teach you alot of stuff that you will most likely never use behind your bar. i did fairly well in new orleans as a bartender. i agree start at the bottom and work your way up get knowledge of wines beers and mixed drinks and observe and sooner or later you will catch yourself behind the bar!

i think that someone who is has patients outgoing and that is talkative is a great bartender.

Good Luck!
