Becoming a Chef at 33? |
I have been a Paramedic all my working life. I am now 32 and would really like to have a chance at being a Chef with the view to owning my own restuarant one day. I just want to know who has changed their career at 33 years of age and went to chef school? I would really like to hear how you found it. Hard? Easy? Worth doing? Any information is good information! Thanks! i am not 33 but i want to share my views. i always wanted to be a good cook, pastry chefs. to put food infront of people and amaze them with taste beyond imagination. The blissful look on people eating great food is enough to live my dream. i always feel hapiness in the good food i eat, be it mum's cooking or a nice warm choco cake.. all i need to to enjoy! so even you are 33, life is alway about keeping dream alive. no point having a job as it provides you a roof. Live the dream, be the dream I know several people who have gone to culinary school after the age of 30. One of them got a pastry certificate, and while he doesn't work in the field, he loves the fact that he can bake all sorts of amazing things. He loved it, and he likes the fact that if he should get tired of his job, he can always move into the food industry. Another is still in school and he absolutely loves it. Yes, it's difficult at times. His wife (my cousin) told me that one of the hardest things for him to learn was to sample things and be able to tease apart the different flavors so he can tell what's in it. Despite that, he loves school and cannot wait to graduate and get a job. He absolutely loves everything about it. There are several chefs in my family, and while they were all head chef at some important place at one time or another in their lives, they no longer work in the field, simply because it does require a lot of energy and weird hours (you mainly work at night, and really late, like into the early morning hours), but none of them would trade the experience, and all of them love working with food. My uncle was a chef for years--we eat at their house a lot, and I have never eaten anything that came out of his kitchen which I didn't find absolutely delicious. If it's what you want to do, then go for it. At 33, you still have plenty of time to go to school, learn the trade, and work toward having your own restaurant. It's very much worth it, I think, if it's going to make you happy. Realistically, you are already doing a job where you help people, but I think you will find that being a chef is just as rewarding. You will still be helping people by feeding them delicious food, and you will be making both yourself and them happy in the bargain. You can't beat that! I am a Director with The Pampered chef and have been with the company for 10 years and will also turn 33 at the end of the year. If you love the idea of being a chef, why not consider our company. You have the flexibility of owning your own business and controlling your income. There are wonderful people in this company and there is unlimited growth and earning potential. Plus you would be able to satisfy your cravings to be a chef. Many have made this company there career, myself included. Please feel free to contact me and I would be happy to answer your questions in detail. Work in a restaurant for a few years before you go to school. It's a great job but the work is really hard ands it can be a big waste of money if you go to school and decide you hate it. You will learn more in school if you have some experience too. I switched careers at 28 into food service and loved it. |
