Why are restaurants always short on help?

I use to work at a Bill Knapp's and everytime I got
a day off the phone rings and its the boss needs me to work.I had my mother lie and tell them I was not home and they got nasty with her.She fianlly told them He leaves on his day off because he
knows you will call him. Why did they not have more
help? Why do restaurants have a high turnover?
I got fired for refusing to work 7 days a week.
It should not be my problem if they are short staffed. What about the 5 day work week rule?

It is a highly volatile business. As most jobs involving shift work. It is a job people take because there schedules require work in off hours. ie, students, families that one parent works mornings, the other nights, also a second source of income. There are those that have aspirations of professional jobs and restaurants are just a means of getting there. However; alot can be gained by work experience prior to a professinal career.

It being in the service industry, a lot of people don't understand what it means to serve the guest. They think it should be done on their terms, but that's not really service.

Also there are poorly run companies that do not treat employees well, so they get poor management, therefore poor employees as well.

I have low turnover because my employees know what is expected and exactly what they will benefit for meeting those expectations. Those that don't get it right away find that they will soon will, or they discover that this isn't the type of job for them. I will not even allow employees that want to work seven days to do so. Most of mine average 5 days a few will do a six day work week, mostly when they are trying to pick up a little extra cash. Source(s): 18 years of restaurant experience (10 as management)
it takes to much time to hire. to hire some one takes hours... hours you could be doing something else.

so they rather use you.
They probably have a high turnover because they do not treat their employees the right way in the first place. It seems to be the same in retail companies too. They force employees to work every day until the middle of the night and then wonder why they quit.
Worked to the bone in retail for 4 months before I had to quit because school matters more
Low pay for labor intensive work.
there is no 5-day work week rule in America, but I don't see how firing you solved any of their problems. Restaurant work is pretty much bottom of the barrel, that's why they have trouble keeping help
