When an employer wants you to be flexible, do you think they'll be willing to negotiate the schedule? |
The problem is that I applied for a part time job that requires you to be flexible. Most jobs I find ask you for that. Anyway, I have another full time job where I work M-F 8:30 to 4:30. The best part is that I know my schedule for that job all the time. I can work the part time job anytime after 4:30, weekends and holidays. I am hoping that they will work with me, so that I can still get the position. Except for that 8 hour time from M-F I would say I'm flexible. Anyone else ever had this problem occur? They want to know if you are available as needed. Companies like nothing better than a reliable "on call" employee. So much so, they might be inclined to abuse the opportunity. It would be better to go in with some guide lines rather than trying to cut back later. I would suggest you hand write your criteria in the top right hand corner of your application or resume . Remember, part time can be interpreted as anything up to 38 hours. If this is too much to start, you could request "half time". This could be anything up to twenty hours. Under the status preferred you could note the shifts you would most easily be able to fill, ranked in that order. That is: (Part time or Half time) Week ends Holidays ( Are Thanksgiving and Christmas non working? ) Evenings ( Most likely to affect your full time position ) On call - Subject to prior commitments Clear objectives reduce the possibility of a misunderstanding. Good Luck. Probably they will...usually, employers that require flexibility are trying to say that they want someone to work nights and weekends as well as being on 'call' to fill in someone else's shift. Beware of when they want a 'team player' though...that's often a euphemism for working extra hours 'off' the clock.... Mine and my several brother's hard experience. I have worked some part time jobs through temp agencies. Usually these employers want you to work where their regular full time employees don't or won't! Be flexible means they would like to stretch you like a "rubber band", using you anywhere they can! They would also like you to do "more for less". They don't care about you or your other job, just their company. Be cautious! The employer wants you to be "flexible" That means you work when they want you, not when your schedule allows you to work for them Been there, done that. |
