Should I tell the restaurant I'm working for that I am looking for another job? |
I just started waitressing there less than two weeks ago because I am between jobs and looking for an administrative office job and I needed money. I have two interviews set up. Should I wait till I hear if I get one of the jobs 1st? Speaking from experience as an ex-restaurant manager, do not tell the restaurant that you are looking for another job. Why rock the boat before it is in the water? Some restaurants and other jobs - depending on the laws of your state - will let you go as soon as you tell them. You do not need this stress right now of being unemployed. Just be the best server you can be while you are there to leave on the best terms you can. You never know when you need an old job to fall back on again in the future. If you can do it, I would not give notice until a week before you start whatever admin. job you receive, and then if the restaurant keeps you, you can work two jobs for just a the first week. Best of luck! I think you should wait until you hear back... That way you don't put yourself on the defensive and your boss won't take offensive. When you hired on did you tell the restaurant that you were only "slummin" until you found an office job? Either way, you don't want to put yourself in a bad spot. Never, never tell your current employer you are looking for another job. You don't have to do that. this is not how it is done. they will not warn you if they fire you or lay you off and if you warn them you are leaving they will look to hire someone to replace you and if they find someone before you go they will let you go early so it will hurt you to be honest with them I would wait too. I understand you want to be honest with your current employer but if you tell them now they might let you go and you don't want that happening if you dont have a job lined up. NO!! IF YOU GIVE THEM THE HEADS UP THAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER JOB THAT GIVES THEM A CHANCE TO FIRE YOU !! AND THEN YOU REALLY WILL BE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER JOB Don't tell them until you have a firm starting date at a new job- to do otherwise is to invite them to replace you before you can leave, so they won't be left short staffed. Try to give them as much notice as possible so they can find a replacement for you. |
