What is minimum wage in New York, is it the same for all workers, in restaurants offices etc? |
Or is minimum wage lower in some occupations? Effective 7/24/07 the minimum wage in NY is $7.25 per hour. This doesn't apply to restaurant workers who earn tips. The start significantly lower than this and make it up in tips. these lower adjustments to minimum wage are called allowances. Food service workers may earn $4.60 per hour because their total compensation includes expected tips. Tips can vary by a huge margin in NYC, so find a place that is popular and ask waitstaff what to expect in average tips per week. Bartenders tend to do relativelt well in NYC. When required uniforms are maintained by the worker, certain allowances also apply. Other service workers have a minimum rate of $5.40 per hour. There are also allowances for meals and lodging supplied by an employer. Minimum wage is only for actual jobs, and it should be 6.50 an hour. If it's not an official job, it's probably not bound by the wage. That is a good question. I know in some states if you earn tips you actually start at a lower minimum wage. Unfortunatly, minimum wade is lower for service personel. $5.35 |
