www.nytimes.com (in the search engine type "top chef dreams crushed by student loan debt")

DO YOUR RESEARCH PLEEAAASSSEEE. also, go to salary.com and get the real salaries of cook/chefs and research the working conditions, etc.-the majority of grads come out making $10/hr-you can make that without paying $50,000++++ for some bs. also, you said u were from california so by all means do not go to california culinary academy-they are facing lawsuits as we speak and im pretty sure more will come not only from that school, but others as well. THIS CAREER CHOICE IS NOT A STABLE ONE-IF U DON'T CARE ABOUT HAVING MONEY AND MEDIOCRE IS OK FOR U THEN GOOO AHEAD WITH IT, BUT I CAN PROMISE YOU, YOU WILL HAVE STUDENT LOANS THAT U WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO PAY ON BECAUSE OF THE LOW SALARY U WILL BE MAKING.

DON'T THINK YOU'RE TAKING THE EASY WAY OUT, BEING A COOK/CHEF IS A HARD JOB AND ONLY A FEW STAY IN IT IN THE LONG RUN.

do not listen to these cook at home moms who watch foodnetwork all day thinking this is what it's really like..it's NOT. go work in a kitchen for 2 MONTHS, then decide whether u want to pursue this. u may email me at lade587@yahoo.com. Source(s): I graduated from culinary school; i worked in a 5 star 5 diamond hotel.
i'm planning also.
i'm thinking about it too im not really sure what im doing tho i enjoy cooking soo i guess its an option
great pay if you become master chef.
my dad used to be a master chef. Now he's sitting at the next computer in old man shorts playing soliatire.
My Father is a Chef, i suggest you do it is a very great thing to do, friends get impressed, and hey when ur married when wife is tired u can cook!!!! she WILL be happy :)
If you get into some of the better schools out of NYC or LA - you can get some really good starting positions at great restaurants in those areas, which in a few years time and a lot of dedication on your part, could lead to becoming a lead chef for a restaurant or even opening your own restaurant.

Addendum

I would take a look at www.FoodTV.com and take a look at some of the bios of their top chefs and what schools they attended. There's also some schools that the network is associated with.
