What is the best thing to wear to an interview for an office job? It's better to be safe than sorry so always wear a business suit. Nice suit, nice shows, groom yourself and bring an extra resume with references in a nice folder. It shows that you are a professional and are serious in acquiring the position. But you should wear a nice skirt (at the knee or below), panty hose, a nice shirt, a jacket (conservative - nothing too loud or funky), and nice dress shoes - again nothing too high-heeled or funky. You can wear dress pants instead of a skirt, if you prefer. Make sure you are very well groomed - you don't need a manicure and pedicure (won't hurt, though) but you do need to have your nails neat and clean, hair done, with a little makeup. Keep your jewelry simple - earrings, watch or bracelet, ring... Basically, you want to dress one step above how you would for work every day. I met one college intern female, and she later confided in me that she did all of her shopping for office close in the thrift store. she had it dry cleaned and wore it. turns out the the talbots store across the stree from it donates a lot of clearance merchandise that is new. i thought it was quite clever/creative and really respected her to rise above / obtain a solution. you would have NEVER known I have seen some interns come in with dark slacks, shirt , tie. ff the interviewer gets a sense that this is the best the person can do, and it's a high potential candidate, they might overlook the dress. please note that this happens about 3-5 percent of the time. be very careful in proofing your resume, one typo might not get you interview and not being dressed properly might be the one factor in which the interviewer has to decide on between two equal candidates. you can always go to the workplace / or places employees are known to gather for lunch, if you are not permitted to be in the parking lot. just observe how other people are dressed and you will get an idea of the dress code. but for interviewing a suit is still best choice.
