Concerned about being able to carry all the plates and stuff to tables for position in restaurant? |
How do you do it ? How much do the plates of food and everything else usually weigh ? How much do you carry at one time? Concerned from a balance and gravity standpoint. So just wondering about how many pounds it usually is? It's totally all about balance. Of course if you're built like a twig this will probably make the load a bit harder to carry easily. Restaurant plates are all pretty sturdy, and depending on where you work, dishes may be "presented" a certain way. I used to work at a chain Italian restaurant where the food was in a crock dish, but it was placed on a big plate for "presentation." The heaviest my trays have ever gotten would be MAYBE around 7lbs. I was never good with putting multiple plates on my arms either, because I'm a petite gal - so it was always the tray for me. I rest some of the tray on my shoulder as a balance point, and that's what works for me. You just have to practice til you find your own comfort spot/level, and don't worry - I've seen plenty of spills/crashes from people's plates sliding off their trays. It happens! Just make sure the hot food doesn't fall on a guest... then it gets ugly. They really are pretty heavy & balance is key HOWEVER 1- No one wants you to drop anything. They're going to s l o w l y teach you that until you're comfortable. 2- Depending on if you carry plates in your hand or on a tray a-why dont you practice with empty plates at home b- when you carry a large tray, it is best to hoist it onto your shoulder with both hands, let in rest on your shoulder while still holding it with 2 hands (across the bottom to the other side with your left hand- gripping firmly) Again- no one wants yu to drop anything, they will know and YO will know when you're ready. Dont worry about it. 15 years as a server- trained A LOT of newbies. |
