Is there really a benefit to attending a bar tending school?Do jobs really prefer you to have a certification? |
I'm just looking to supplement my income with a part-time job and I don't want to shell out $500 if it won't better my chances of finding employment. I figured most restaurants and bar have on the job training. NO NO NO!!!! Its the biggest waste of money! I didnt attend bartending school. IN the bar business, 99 percent of the time bars and restaurants will NOT hire a bartender from outside. you start as a server/barback and move your way up. At my bar, I see half a dozen people come in with no bartending experience but they think that because they went to bartending school, they will get hired. Its good to go to help improve your skills, but dont expect to land a bartending job just because of it. Start out barbacking......and work your butt off. I am just guessing but I think there is a lot to that. What is a taquilla sunrise? How much taquilla? what is a tom collins? There is so many drinks out there from a margaritta to pineapple fiz. Get a bar tending book to learn the different drinks, that way when you go for a job interview you can demonstrate that you know how to make the drinks without having to go to bar tending school. If you are thinking of going to a Chili's, Applebees for any of those kinds of restaurants. They hire and train their bartenders within their staff. I wouldnt waste my money on a school like that. First go to a small bar or just beer bar. You will learn it soon enough. Good luck. There's no real diploma for bar-tending. But you do learn many recipes, how to prep (someone has to cut all that fruit), pouring correctly and other skills that are required. Check around at your local bars and restaurants and see what they're looking for. Ask the hiring managers. They'll be your best source of info. Good Luck went to bartending school |
