I'm 15 and ideally i would like to become a chef then own and run a carribean restuarant? |
But where can i look to pick up skills, please no negativity i get loads of that from school. first off its a good thing that you have a goal. now all you need to do is list the steps it will take to achieve that goal. you need to find a carribean resteraunt to work at as a waiter. after you graduate high school you need to go to some kind of training school for the culinary arts. after that when youve worked as a chef for someone else maybe you will have saved enough money and built up a clientel that you can start your own resteraunt. If your high school offers a food preparation course, take it. I am sure the instructor of the class can help you later. Try a close by community college. They have classes (especially during the summer time). You could also just simpley start at home by watching cook shows or reading cook books and testing it out on famil (rachel ray isn't a chef...she is a started by cooking for family and friends). Or even cook a great meal and bring it to lunch for your friends once a week. Also if you aren't working you could find a independently own restaurant that you like...then ask the owner if you could intern or just help the chef out in the kitchen free of charge. Good luck...i hope you make it My little cousin is a chef! I think that's wonderful. When you are 16, you can get a job as a busboy in a restaurant. Work your way up from there. The best way to learn about the restaurant business is to BE right there in it. Next, start cooking. Cook for your mom, your significant other, throw little dinner parties for your friends. Everybody likes food!!! Especially when someone else cooks it, lol. There are a lot of places you can go to get skills. Sometimes the YMCA offers courses. You can start small, not necessarily Carribean food. There are a lot of cooking classes you can take. Ask your mom or dad to help you find something. You'll learn the most if you get a job in a restaurant. You will learn to be a master chef by experimenting in the kitchen. Don't get dissappointed if what you make tastes like crap. Learn from it and try again. You can aslo google "simple Carribean style meals" and try some of those. Ask your mom or someone to help you out. They can show you the basics, like measuring and choosing the right vegetables and stuff. Pay attention, keep at it and have patience. Learning to cook takes a lot of time and patience. Good luck! You're very lucky that you have a dream and know what ou want at such an early age! http://www.culinary-institutes.com/... I worked in a nice restaurant when I was in school washing dishes , it was the most fun I have ever had at a job , I learned alot and considered culinary school . at work when I had had time , I help prep food for the chef As others have said check and see if you school has a food program. Where I live not all schools have one but if there is one nearby that does you can take a different bus and go there. If you have a community college nearby they might have classes that you could take in the summer. If you want to own you will need experience in EVERYTHING. Now at 15 you might have a hard time finding a job but it can be done. Being a dishwasher or busboy will get you on your way. Even a job at Subway would get you started until you can move to a regular restaurant. At some point get a job as a cook. A lot of people just go to culinary school and finish with no "real world" experience....... even if it is working at Applebees. On that note working as a server is super valuable. A chef really needs to understand the front of the house. And look around on the net. A lot of the culinary associations and restaurant associations offer career development for young people. Like summer scholarships. For a paper or career day interview a chef. You might find yourself a mentor, a refence and a job. And to those negative people....... forget them. Sure owning is going to be far down the road. But knowing what you want to do puts you way ahead of 99% of other people. Other kids your age are worrying only about who is going out with who. And even if you or your family don't have a lot of money for culinary school (you simply must do that!) or when you are done you don't have much money......... what you want to do can be done. Good luck! |
