What should i do about a bad reference that i should not have gotten?please read?

i worked for a nurseing home part time cleaning the lobby and dinning rooms after the last meal of the day.the guy doing the cleaning in the day time was always on the clock even when he was not there and i complaind to to my boss about it and she never did anything about it so i went to the admin.and told her and she never did anything about it.the man was getting 40 hours in -in 3 days and wasn't even there so i got mad and turned in my notice but quit a week earlier than i was suppose to and now my then boss is giveing me a bad reference and telling every one that calls for a reference that i was out once a week which is not true and from what i'v been told she laughs the whole time she is on the phone with them.she was never there when i was working but she would always leave me a note telling me what a good job i was doing.so i had to be doing something right.some of the nurses even ask me about cleaning their houses.sooo what should i do about this problem?

Two options:
1. Don't use this job/person as a reference
2. Get one of the other nurses to be your reference.
Is there anyone else there that could give you a reference? Someone in authority but not your boss? It is against the law for an employer to give a bad reference as they open themselves up to litigation and slander and libel. However they can be honest about things you have done wrong, if any. Quitting a week earlier could be mentioned in a reference because it is a fact unfortunately. Hopefully, if you go for another job you will be called to interview before they ask for references and you will have the opportunity to justify your reasons for leaving directly to a new employer. Good luck, and I hope you kept some of those notes she left you, could be good to show a new employer.
I am sorry you were abused like that. It is against the law to give bad references really. They are only supposed to say whether they would hire you again or not. I would call your supervisor's boss, take it to the top.Let them know you will sue them if you get another bad reference. Also, call the Labor Board and complain about it and file for unemployment if you are qualified. There are two reasons for doing this. One is to get a claim if you have put in enough time. Two, is it will put your supervisor on the spot because she will have to submit proof to them that you did not do your job. Usually if you quit a job you cannot get unemployment but sometimes you do if there is a valid enough reason.Legally, an employer has to give you a verbal warning, and two written write ups that you sign before a person can be terminated. I realize this didn't happen but its good to remember. At least, she will have to face the music. If you ever get notes or anything complimenting you on your job performance, always keep those for future reference.
Its hard out there on people who try to be honest because so many people aren't. You will find a good job just keep your chin up.
Dont let this happen.Your reference should reflect what kind of employee you are. There is someone always higher up than the boss.Seek this person out and DEMAND a fair go.You have nothing to lose except a darn good reference which you deserve.Dont let the big guns walk all over you.Its your God given right to get a TRUE reference.Next tI'me im over that way I will pay your old boss a visit,I'll sort him out for ya!
