What if you don't tip a waiter/server?

How often do you tip a waiter at a restaraunt or anywhere?

Is it absolutely neccessary or what? lol

What if you don't ? Is it rude? incosiderate?

What if you're a college student and you're kinda broke? lol

I mean i don't tip often ... I would say outta 10 times I would tip 3 times

I mean its not like im gonna hurt the waiter/waitress' feelings or anything or neither am i gonna ever see am again or seem em often...I pay 1000s of dollars for school and prolly will be for the next 3-4 years until i get my masters so im hodling onto whatever i have as much as i can lol

im only 18...so this is one of life's little lessons here...lemme at it lol

The idea behind tipping was "T-o I-nsure P-romptness" you tipped and next time you were there, you got better services.

However owners now a days have to follow a rule (or are supposed to), the wages of the waiter/tress PLUS their tips must at least meet minimum wage, or the owner is required (again if it is followed) pay additional to get them to minimum wage.

So yes, their pay can be (at a 7.25 minimum wage) close to $3 to $4 an hour. Of course, good times, and they can sometimes make more than minimum wage, some places like Outback will pay a little over minimum and their tips can put them up to a decent wage.

Dont forget also, as somone else mentioned, your tip will alot of times get split between, bartender if you have a drink, bus-boy, matri'de (never could spell it)

Since 15% is considered a standard, if you pay less, you are actually taking money from them. Sometimes crappy service will warrent a "penalty" but how would you like to have 15% of your grade removed from your classes because the teacher did not have time to grade the papers. Not your fault.. If you did the papers bad, then I could see it.

Personally, I try to Tip at Minimum 15% PLUS round up to nearest dollar, I did the 2 pennies one time, but the service was horrid.. 1/2 hour sitting, never got water, no silverware, food finally got ordered, served, still no silverware or drinks and each had been asked for sevaral times. orders were wrong, allergens were in 1 food when specificly asked to be not used.

My best tip was actually at olive garden, salad and breadsticks, and I tipped MORE than the meal.. so it worked out to be about 112% tip.. because he stayed nearby, as soon as I looked like I needed something, he was right there with it, drink never went below 1/3, food was fast, hot and fresh (salad of course cold), he took some time made some small talk to be friendly without being too close or too friendly. Its very rude. Servers live off of their tips they make. And in most places they have to tip out bussers, bartenders etc. And they tip based off of their sales so if you don't tip they are PAYING for you to eat there, take up their table that could be making them money and to deal with you.

If you are broke here is a tip- don't go out to eat! Who cares if you're in school- most of those servers are doing the same thing but they are working there to pay their way through college and some are even single parents who are trying to pay for school AND raise kids. You not tipping is hurting more people than you know. and if they aren't raising kids the tips are what is used to pay bills, rent, gas etc. Servers for the most part do not get paychecks.. if they aren't void then they are only for like $15 bucks.

Your parents should have taught you better. I would be ashamed if my child grows up and is that selfish.
Single mom going to school full time and trying to raise a little boy on my own
I usually tip at any resturant that there is service... because they only make a fraction of what you would make... I mostly do 10% but if the service is awesome then 15% max nothing more and if the service is poor then I give them about 5%...
Even if it is just a couple of dollars it is better than no tip! If you happen to go back to the same restaurant with the same waiter, and they remember you, you will not get the service you may expect. It is extremely rude not to leave a tip, that is pretty much what their paycheck consists of since waitresses only get paid a few bucks an hour from their employer! Just imagine if that was you working your butt off! The only acceptable reason not to leave a tip is if they were a really bad worker and some how offended you. If you still chose not to tip, do not do it around your date she'll think you're super CHEAP!
um.. hmm.. well if you dont tip, essentially, you yourself have more money. The Idea of tipping is to show the waitor/ess how good of a job they're doing, and that they deserve more than what they're getting paid. If you think it was bad service, don't tip. If it was really bad service, place two pennies in a glass filled 1/4 with water - turn the glass over quickly trapping the water and the two pennies with the table. clean up any spilt water(if you want) and leave.
