Help with decision? |
i have a problem deciding between 2 jobs.............i work at a garage now as a mechanic and i put in my 2 weeks notice and my boss told me he will pay me 4 dollars more an hour if i dont leave and i might get a formans job if i stay but i dont get out of work until 5 every day and i have to work 8-12 on saturdays, the new job already starts at 3 dollars more an hour than i make now but i only have to work until 2:30pm. so should i take the 4 dollar raise and stay at my current job and have to work on saturday or take the new job at 3 dollars more an hour and dont have to work sat and get out at 2:30? keep in mind i have 4 kids in school and 1 baby. what should i do? take more pay or more time(come home earlier). At the place where you'd get off at 2:30, would you be starting at the same time as your current job? If so, you'll be paid for 2.5 hours less per day. Will the extra $3.- per hour make up for that? It sure wouldn't make up for the $4.- per hour raise you'll get if you stay at your current job. In other words, which will give you more in your pocket on payday? Is your current job something you enjoy? Are you good at it? Is the other job doing a similar type of work, or would you have a large learning curve once you got there? With 5 kids at home, 4 of whom are just getting back into school, can you afford the emotional and mental drain? Personally, only knowing the details you've shared, Id think you should give your current job another 9-12 months, with the pay hike. During this year, focus on your work there at the garage, and still continue to look at your options. Discuss this with your spouse. It's really got to be a mutual decision, of course. Well you have seniority at your current place of employment but there had to be more than just money and time for you to go looking for another job. If you need the money then go with that decision but if the money is not really an issue then try to spend the time with your kids because even though I don't have any myself, I know they grow up fast. 1 Make a pros and cons list. Figure out what you would bring home weekly for each job and what you can afford. A lot of people find that spending more times with their kids is invaluable.. so if you can manage.. it might not be such a bad idea. On the other hand, you'll get a promotion with less time with your kids. WHat's more importnant? What is realistic? |
