What should i major in or wich profession to choose pastry chef or social worker? and explain why? |
if i choose pastry chef later down the road id probably learn all culinary arts and have a resturant but if i did social work id be helping others wich is rewarding and id be working with orphans and domestic abuse situations I don't think there is a major of pastry chef. Culinary schools are generally technical schools and you will not get a Bachelor degree. Social work is a profession and the minimum degree is a BSW. So the question you might start with is are you going to get a bachelor's degree or not. Now there are BA's in Restaurant and Hotel management or Hospitality. I think you have to ask which one you are really more interested in. Neither one is going to necessarily make you rich (restaurants have the highest failure rate of any business, self-employed people with their own business usually spend most of their time and money keeping the business afloat). Social Workers make a comfortable living but work with difficult situations and systems. Each will have rewards and challenges. Ultimately a career is really about what you have passion around. Now all that said..social work is a very diverse profession and does allow you to grow and change focus in a way that is different than hospitality. DA Just ask yourself this... would you rather cook for a living or would you rather be serving others? Being a cook keeps you back from the public, set back just enough to get your work done. Being a social worker brings into the nitty gritty and your work is quite literally thrown in your face. Both are tough career options, so I don't envy you one bit. Social services pay a lot less than even a pastry chef.Being a all around do-gooder will get U no where in this world. I'm a nice guy and hate it dearly. IF these are your two choices you are really not old enough to make these choices. I would chose the one that burns you out about life straight up before you get to old to think the world is a good place. Food service is one of the jobs where you need to work first, then go to school. If you love it , it's the best job in the world but it is really hard, hot, unbelievablely stressful and rather dirty work that very few are really cut out for. Social work is a job where you need to go to school for a long time in order to really help people but the pay is crap. I spent many happy years in the kitchen and my best friend, who was one of the world's most incredable waiters, is a Social Worker. After 10 years out from school , she no longer needs her second job at the resturaunt. So from our experiance, you should go to work in a kitchen while you go to school to be a social worker so you can make ends meet. Many happy years in the back of the house. |
