What are some common job interview questions and tips? |
What are some common job interview questions and tips? The most common type of interview is the behavioral interview. This is where they ask you questions based on your past work experience. Having done a great deal of recruiting, I can tell you that they're not just looking at your answers, but also at the way you answer them. In other words, they want to get you talking so they can see how well you communicate your ideas. Here are a list of common questions and some of the things I look for in an answer when hiring: 1. Tell me about yourself? - It's the most likely question to be asked and it comes in various forms. They don't want to know about your three kids, your past relationships with your previous boyfreinds or really anything that pertains to your personal life. They want to know about your past work expereince, your skills, your ambitions! You should be prepared to answer this question in whatever form it is asked. Make sure you have a one to two minute answer summarizing how many years experience you have, what sort of skills you have, and some basic personality traits such as "I love organizing things" or "I find working with people to be the most satisfying part of my job". Avoid cliche's like "I'm good with people" or "I'm a hard worker". You can say this in a new and different way. 2. What are your strengths and weaknesses?- This is one of those questions where people get the most stumped. It's very hard to come up with your best strength and your weaknesses! Remember to always be honest and not exagerate your answer. Try and think of your top two best strengths and integrate them together. For example: "I think my greatest strength would be my ability to handle change and to help resolve tense situations". As far as the weakness is concerned, you obviously don't want to announce that you're constantly late! Try and turn a weakness into a positive, or focus on a small weakness that isn't very applicable to your position, such as "If the copy machine breaks down, please don't call me! I'm useless when it comes to fixing complicated equipment". Of course, this would backfire if you were applying to be a technician... 3. What are your long and short term goals? - What they are really asking is...will you be here five years from now? They want someone who has a direction in life and they want to know if your direction is the same as theirs. If you tell them you plan to travel the world in a year, obviously you might not be the best fit. Make sure you emphasize you are looking for a permanant home and want to grow within a company. 4. Tell me about a time when....? - They love to ask for examples, so you better have a few in mind. Usually they'll ask for an example of dealing with a difficult customer, disagreeing with a supervisor, etc. You need to be able to explain what the problem was, how you handled it and what was the outcome. 5. Do you have any questions? - Yes...you do. Always have questions that pertain to the JOB, not benefits or salary! Pay attention to what the interview says about the position and ask for information about the company, it's culture, it's dress code, the kind of people who work there, why the person who had the job previously left. Show interest! There are many, many more of course, but these are the basic questions! Also, as someone else posted, they cannot ask about your age, religion, medical conditions or any other protected information. Hope this helps! what shift can you work ? where have you worked before ? do you have transportation ? Well first of all there are some questions they cant ask you........ and if they do you do not have to answer them... they cant ask you if you have a sitter, or have transportation to work , or if you are pregnant,( for a lady.)..... but you do need to be very well presented....... nice, neat, clean, and SMILE>... I interview every week where I work........and if someone comes in straggley and in their every day clothes, its an instant bad sign to me....... have your references ready... know the phones numbers of your references... have your ss card and drivers license with you ..... and always answer truthfully....... dont give answers that you "think" the interviewer wants to hear........ we want to hear the truth... we want to see if you can adjust to any situation at the job...... good luck |
