Working on an offshore rig? |
does anyone have any experience or advice about working (Kitchen Steward) on oil rigs off shore? I will be going to work for a company that provides catering services for the rigs and just wanted to know what to expect from someone who may have done it already, Thanks Well, I was in the US Navy, and aboard an aircraft carrier. I can tell you some things are going to be the same as a Navy ship. You're likely to get fresh produce-Flown in by Helicopter. You will likely have to pick up the produce at the helipad and take it to the kitchen. I don't know if they use Navy terminology: Kitchen is Galley, Dining Room is Mess Deck. Navy serves four meals everyday: Breakfast Lunch Dinner Midnight Rations- "Mid Rats" for short. Most Important Warning: Keep powdered soap away from cooking area! It's been known to happen that sailors have gotten sick because soap powder was accidently mixed into the food. Always wash your hands after using the bathroom. Food that has been sitting for more than 4 hours must be thrown out, to prevent food poisoning. Source(s): Navy Veteran- personal experience. I worked on a dinner cruise and I found the galley really cramped, the stairs slippery and high, and when the sea was rough it was hard not to puke. The pay was good but not worth the constant sea sickness. |
