Fired from my restaurant job! Is my culinary career doomed? |
So, I took the advice of several people, and instead of going to culinary school, got a job at an excellent restaurant - and got fired after three months. They left me, the pastry prep cook, in charge of the entire pastry department three days a week, and then fired me for incompetence (Apparently six weeks of experience really *can't* replace culinary school and the 7 years experience my predecessor had! What a suprise...) Anyhow, have any of you had similar experiences, and still succeeded? Is my budding culinary career doomed? No, your culinary career is not doomed. The foodservice industry is a such a broad field and an essential service (people must eat, right?), you have to work real hard to ruin your career. Don't worry... Someone will hire you despite what happened in your last job. I've seen cooks and foodservice managers get fired from my workplace and all have ended up getting new jobs elsewhere without much problem. I don't believe it is. You were only the prep cook, not the pastry chef. You should go to culinary school now. There are a lot of jobs you can do in a restaurant. If this is something you really want to pursue, I suggest you consider going to school and get the proper training. There really aren't any shortcuts to getting what you want out of life. Those who put their nose to the grindstone and work in a planned, systematic manner will eventually get to where they want to go. No, I don't believe your career is doomed. If asked, explain that you only had six weeks of experience, were a pastry prep cook, and placed in charge of the department. As long as this is the only excuse you used in an interview later, you will be fine. Can you go to culinary school now? Maybe a bit unfair to let you go for incompetence, sounds more like inexperience. but now you do have some experience. Regardless of what you choose to do 3 months working and then being fired will not ruin your career! This is the beginning learn from it. I wish you the best and if you really want to be in a culinary profession not much will stop you, Keep moving on but take the learning experiences along. Everyone get fired from time to time. The ones that rise to the top of their professions are the ones that deal with the situations properly. That is get off your butt and try again. I have owned several restaurants and have a food and beverage website that may be of help: http://www.foodandbeverageunde... If I were to have quit when I got fired I certainly wouldn't have been able to open several successful restaurants. The key for you is to learn from your experience and grow. Food and beverage is a strange business and you just have to keep plugging and keep learning. As far as your last experience I think you did the right thing by getting some experience before you went into culinary school. Too many people do the opposite, pay a ton of money for a degree, then find out that they are just as ill equipped as you were. There is no experience like real experience. Get another job and give it another shot. Be honest about your experience and don't let them pour too much on you. Set yourself up to succeed! Visit the site and drop me a line via the contact page if I can help further Cheers Scott http://www.foodandbeverageunderground.co... |
