I want to be a waiter? |
I work as a busser in one of the best fine dining restaurants in the US. My goal is to become server but chances are very lame since the policies of this restaurant are very strict (You need to have a solid knowledge of food and wine in order to make it) So, are there any restaurants are there that could possibly hire someone like me in order to train me to be a server? become friends with someone there that can help you. Pick their brain, show a genuine interest. do some research on the net about what wine goes with what. but make a friend and pick there brain. Listen to what customers want and order when your bussing tables. Keep your ears open. I used to be a busser just like you at Red Lobster. I started as a busser because I wasnt 18 yet and now I am serving. Red Lobster trains you and you dont have to have a strong knowledge of anything. Its a fast paced resturant and the money is great. Red lobster is nation-wide so you shouldnt have a problem finding one near you. I would think that experience would be the best teacher, and who better to ask than someone thats doing what you would like to be doing. i would try to enlist the help of a co-worker. im sure there is someone there that would be willing to help you learn what is needed. you already have one foot in the door, thats more than most, make the most of it while you are there. if you leave to get experience it wont be as easy to get back in. Grab a menu and some index cards and make yourself a set of flash cards to study. Once you have the information firmly in your brain you will be able to pass any test they throw at you. It is also wise to cultivate a friendship with the best, most experienced waiter on the team and ask him or her to be your mentor. When the management sees how serious you are they will find an opening for you. It is always better to promote a proven performer than hire an outsider.
