Does anyone know the average wage for a chef? |
i saw somewhere its from $32000 - $70 000 what influences wage rates? Depends on a number of things: 鈥?Geographic location - New York City will pay a higher wage than Idaho. Of course that is all dependent on the cost of living in those areas so it might be a wash in the end. 鈥?Type of restaurant you work in - An exec. chef of a five-star restaurant in an upscale resort hotel will make more than the same position in less ritzy establishment. 鈥?Education - someone who commands a degree from a college or culinary school will earn up to $15k more than someone without that degree. Then you look at the type of chef you are: Exec. Chef - (median salary) $50k./yr Sous Chef - (median salary) $32k./yr Pastry Chef - (median salary) $31k/yr The median listed means that there is an equal amount of people making both more and less - it's a good middle ground. Line cooks, etc. would probably make much less. Source(s): www.culinary-institutes.com Lots of things will influence your rate of pay. Most cooks will make between $8 and $16/hour. It is possible to make 32K with the right experience, in the right location. There is really no limit to how much someone can earn but most will be closer to 30K than 100K. If you were unlucky enough to go to culinary school before working in the industry, you will be on the lower end until your experience catches up to your education.
