Is starbucks a good job choice? |
right now i work at best buy. it's been a great ride, but overall i am no longer satisfied with the job. i want different experiences and to meet different people. i am 19 and i go to school full time (14 units). i also bought a car and my payments are $329 a month. i am interested in working for starbucks. would this be good enough to support my car payment and have a little money for gas and myself? Possibly. Find out what starting pay is for a Barista first (it varies by geographic location....Bay Area CA will pay MUCH MORE than Salt Lake City, UT for example). Then go to www.paycheckcity.com to calculate exactly what you'd be making (minus taxes ect) to see if it's worth it for you. Here are some highlights: ~You get paid every two weeks and they offer direct deposit (I recommend). ~You are able to get great medical, dental & vision insurance for a reasonable rate if you work only 20 hours a week or more. ~You can cover shifts at other stores if you need more hours &/or you can transfer stores if you ever relocate or just need a different store. ~Your tips are paid every two weeks in most stores and (if the stores are smart) it's on the weeks you don't get your paychecks. So you'll either get paid on Friday with your tips, or your paycheck (but never both at the same time). ~If nobody in the store can cover one of your shifts, you can always call other stores to see if someone else can. ~You get a 20% Discount on almost all items, Drinks & Food included ~You get free drinks while you are working ~You get a free lb of coffee a Week (or box of tea) ~You know more than you ever wanted to about coffee... Tips vary by store, but if you are in a good store then I've had them up to $5/hr. But usually you are looking at around $2-3/hr. They calculate tips by keeping all tip money until it's time to divee up (2 week average). Then a supervisor will account for the hours all employees have worked (only Barista's and Supervisors are able to receive tips) then divide the hours into total amount of tip money. Then they multiply that by how many hours you actually worked for the 2 week period. You DO NOT get tips while you are in training (usually two weeks time frame) FYI! Most Starbucks will NOT schedule you for a 40 hr work week. Usually it's 35 hrs max. This is to allow room so you don't accumulate much overtime (they really hate that). The managers get a smaller bonus if you get part of it by working over time (something the keep in mind). There is A LOT of memorization for drinks as well as coffee beans, but if you like coffee, you are 50% there. I'll tell you one thing, if you think there's nothing to coffee, you've got another thing coming. They train you on EVERYTHING all the way down to how to keep your cash organized in the register. Most stores have a family atmosphere...all employees are more or less tight knit. So there are aways people there to help you. It can be really frustrating the first month because it seems overwhelming. If you are already in school and have a lot on your plate, then learning Starbucks drinks ect. isn't going to help you much. BUT, with any job you are going to have to learn something...so keep that in mind. After awhile you be able to do this job without thinking which helped me when I was in College. Brainless jobs are really the key when you are going through school...LOL! And if you love people, you'll love Starbucks. You'll get to learn all about "The Third Place" and how to appease your customers... Hope this helps... |
