I am 17 and need a job and I'm wanting something besides fast food or waitressing but no one hires a teen!?!

I live in a very small town with nothing in it. I live close to a pretty good sized town though. It seems like all 17 year olds are only good for waitressing or fast food. I want a serious job!

I have gone through this with my three kids when they were teens. Because of child labor laws and/or liability reasons, it is common for people or employers to hire those that are older and more responsible. Don't let disappointment set in, and be confident as well as polite when speaking to perspective employers. If you show you're not afraid of work and do a great job, people are much more apt to give you a chance, and good character reference. So, whatever you choose to do, do your very best.
Don't forget elderly people that maybe needing help with certain tasks. These are other jobs I would recommend: Yard work, car washing, errand running, painting, house cleaning, clearing tables, dish-washing, animal care (such as washing & walking).
If you have special skills/talents, then put them to work... My eldest daughter has always been strong in learning other languages, and she tutors many kids, as well as teaches through Sign Language. My son and youngest daughter have been proven strong swimmers and landed jobs as Lifeguards. My youngest daughter also loves to read, and had acquired a job in a book store she frequently goes to. Some grocery stores may hire for bagging or other positions.
Keeping in mine that school and time to do your homework needs to be a priority in your life. Employers that don't care much about your education may not be someone you want to work for. Hope this helps... Good Luck!
GO TO COLLEGE, or start your own bussiness
try retail...like at macy's, nordstrom, jc penny....any department store. You should be able to get a job in the mall just about anywhere at your age
You can work as an intern in just about any field and they will give you entry level work so that you can learn or you could also try to work in the field of charity. If you express a strong interest in a specific field and offer to work as an intern you can get paid based on the value you show.
I worked at supercuts as the evening receptionist when I was 17.....try a local hair salon....or even try going to a movie theatre. Working fast food isnt a great job, but some money is better then no money.
Ya, that's about it. You're not gonna find much at your age and it's difficult to get a serious job when you're not a legal adult and haven't got a diploma (assuming) or a college degree. you need to start where you can and work your way up. While wasting time looking for a "serious" job, you're missing out on making money.
waitressing is a serious job! keep in mind that no matter what kind of job you get at your age, you won't make as much/more money than you will waitressing. i know people who've graduated college with me and still do double shifts of waitressing 4 nights a week and bring in WAY more money than people with "serious" office jobs.

also - if you're looking into something more fun...i'd recommend camps/day cares/ babysitting/ retail...

the only problem with working in retail, especially in a small town, is that you won't make too much money...and the money that you do make, you'll spend on clothes!
stick to the waitressing!
