Do I have be Kitchen potter then I will be Chef? |
My Ambition is to be a Head Chef or Chef I heard that If I want to be a Chef first I need to do Kitchen pottering then I will be Chef is that true No, not really. That is just a way of getting on the catering ladder. What you must do is show willing to learn a very hard trade. Firstly you will just be a `junior`, doing simple jobs in the kitchen, and slowly you will learn more about cooking and maybe become a pastry chef or commis. It is then that you can be considered as Chef. It takes time and you WILL have a lot of misery whilst you are learning. I went through Hell whilst I learnt my trade, the shouting, being called an idiot etc. It was not nice. Then I was given the boring jobs, mixing and rolling pastry, peeling veg and worst of all, peeling prawns. It will take time mate, but in the end it is a fabulous career. You go for it. Source(s): Chef for 27 years. Do you mean 'porter'? While that is no doubt useful experience, the main talent required to be a Chef is (sorry if this is blindingly obvious) an ability to cook with flair and originality. So there is obviously no guarantee of becoming a chef simply by being a kitchen porter.... My husband is a chef, he went to catering school and got a job in a restaurant working in the kitchen (cooking), he then worked his way up. He's now given that up after almost 15 years, as he feels its about time he got a life! Being a chef is very hard work in the sense that you dont have a social and family life. He used to work all the time, especially holidays (eg: xmas, easter, bank holidays etc) and was missing out on the children growing up. I must also say though that he did enjoy it as he loves cooking especially for other people. Good luck Most people have to serve an "apprenticeship" but I don't think it need necessarily be kitchen porter. Try and apply for a job as a commis chef and then begin to work your way up. Hi,no you can go to a training school in u.k for chefs, uni or college. Actually, you don't have to have any qualifications at all to be a chef in this country, sadly. There are some great chefs who just decided to get a job in hotel etc and started as sous chefs and went to day release college, In some places if you start as a kitchen porter,it will be great grounding, however some work places wont let you move on if your too good at your job on probably minimum wage. My advice is, look into your local college courses and its right time of year to do that if your quick, you may get into the next intake which starts i a few weeks If you have funds, there are many private training schools, but we have great training in the public sector.Good luck. You will be a chef after many years of hard work as porter, line cook, prep cook etc. Don't go the school route. It costs lots of money and if you have no experience no one will hire you. It's a hot dirty job but if you love it, there is none better! Not all cooks are chefs but all good chefs came up through the ranks. |
