When it comes to being a chef, what benefits are included (days off, vacation, medical)? |
I'm thinking of going into this field because I have always wanted to be a chef and hope to one day open my own bakery or restaurant. I know being a chef requires long hours and high stress, which is fine because I love food and love cooking, and would love to cook in a restaurant environment. I want to be a chef for job satisfaction rather than money, however I have a family and I still have to provide for them too. But at the same time , pursue my dream job. So what type of pay, and do chefs get to take vacations and have days off ? I know it sounds stupid, but I always hear how chefs have to work 15 hours a day and high stress, but it never says they get paid vacation days, sick days or days off. I would prefer people that are in the career of culinary/chef to comment. thanks If you want to be a chef, you need to get a job in a restaurant before you go to school. Going to school before working in the industry is the biggest mistake most aspiring chefs make. I worked for many years as a chef before my back gave out so I think I'm qualified to give my opinion of the field. It's hot, dirty and stressful. You can expect to work at any hour of the day depending on what you are cooking. Some days a 15 hour day is not out of the question. Very few places have sick days but most have vacation. You must be able to work nights and weekends and forget about family functions. Starting pay is minimum wage but it does go up with experience. In a good house, line cooks will earn between $8 and $16 an hour. My best advice to you is get a part time job in a kitchen and check it out. Yes, it can be hell, but if you love it, it's the best job in the world and one that really cannot be outsourced! Source(s): Many happy years in the back of the house |
