What's a better job to have while I'm in school? |
This is just a part time job. But I need all the suggestions I can get. At a grocery store - I like the sound of ringing things up. I'll always have something to do which I like for the most part. Golf center with go-carts mini golf and golf range - I think this might be fun but I won't have much to do all the time and think I might stand around a lot. I would like the carefree-ness of it and everything but I don't want to get bored standing around. Waitress/Hostess at a pub - It's just opening, the other pub run by the same owner is awesome and there will probably be bands. Anyone know what the average a waitress and hostess get paid? I heard waitress' make like 3 dollars an hour because of receiving tips, but I dont want to work really hard for 3 dollars if customers dont tip! What do you think I should do? Thanks! Driving distance is all the same basically. Grocery store - sounds good, but if you don't have any cash register experience, the store will usually start you out as a bag boy. Golf center - may be boring when people aren't around. Waitress/hostess - depends on the state. Apparently, federal law only requires $3/hr, based upon tips that you should be receiving, but in CA, you're entitled to minimum wage regardless of what tips you may receive. So, it depends on the state you are in. It also depends on how old you are - if you're 16, you may only be hired at the grocery store as a bag boy. If you're 18 and in college, I would suggest getting a job on campus as it is reliable. take the waitress/hostess. if you are in the USA, you are guaranteed to make AT LEAST minimum wage ($5.85 an hour). if your tips don't come up to make your average wage/hour $5.85, the owner has to make it up to that. you will get plenty of exercise, probably some free food, you will stay busy...and once you have worked at one place, you can always get a job at another! when you are just starting out, or in a part-time job, look for something extra that makes the job better for you. for example: free/cheap food, listening to band, free golf (if you like golf)...at a grocery store, you will get nothing extra. good luck! You will probably have more flexibiity in work hours (think of exams and vacations) at the waitress job as well! made a fortune while in school as waitstaff! * Grocery store - for experience building. It's 'money-handling' experience and if you are going to go corporate (i.e. target management, etc...) it should be to your advantage to have similar work experience. * Waitress/Hostess - not personal experience but I know people who said that waitressing gets them more money than other minimum wage job - because of the tips. If you're old enough to serve alcohol (not to be confused with the age to drink it, you need to be 21 to drink alcohol, but only 19 to serve it in my state), I would look into becoming a waitress at a very nice restaurant. I work in the kitchen of a very nice restaurant and last friday night I saw one of the waitresses's clock out slips, she worked 5 hours and reported $120 in tips. Combined with the 2.25/hr she was making thats a total of about $131 in 5 hours, or $26.20/hr. Of course that was a really great night but my point is you can make a lot of money being a waitress. All three jobs you mentioned are good options and should have a flexible schedule available for you. However, if you are -that- concerned about customers who don't tip or give low tips, then you should think twice before going for the golf center and waitress/hostess jobs since both of them mostly rely on tips as your income. The jobs at the grocery store would be the more stable and consistent in terms of wages since my local grocery store pays $8 an hour. Just work 16 hours per week and you'd have decent money on the side while in school. If you desire the higher pay, of course go do waitressing. If you want steady consistent pay, then go for the grocery store. I wish you the best of luck! The bar will generate the best income, especially if your a cute girl. |
