Can any one tell me more about tax free shopping or the global refund system in europe? |
Is the process worth it and how to go about it? Yes absolutely worth it - 19% VAT - don't you think you spend more then $100 for gifts (=$20 taxreturn) and things to bring home everything nearly 20% cheaper then sold?? Two easy ways to claim - a) special receipt form at shop where you buy, this is a tax return org. which feeds this system and you receive the tax back (after showing goods to customs at the airport) directly when you leave Germany at the airport (e.g. FRA after the security check!), or b) most shops don't participate in this system (only major companies in tourist areas do like a) and those unsually have a "TAX FREE" sticher in their windows), and also for smaller amounts do the following, keep the receipts (try always to use your credit card), show product and receipts to custom office at German airport (ask where it is, there is one at every major airport) receive a custom stamp, then write a letter to merchant with original receipt attached, they will reemburse back to your credit card.... I tried it several times - had no problems! Have fun & enjoy Europe! |
