What are "steps" (relating to government jobs)? |
I am applying to a government job at the G6 level. Since I have never had a federal job before, will I automatically be at Step 1? I noticed that there are 12 steps and the salary varies with each step. Steps in a pay scale are like longevity pay increases. New hires normally come in at Step 1, unless they have exceptional qualifications, in which case the person can be placed into a higher step. You advance one step each year, on your anniversary date, for the first several years. But at the top steps, the waiting period is often 2 or 3 years. The theory is that as you have longer time on the job, your competence grows. While that's usually true, there are exceptions, and they can defer or withhold an annual step increase if your performance is poor. If your work is really great, they can give you a quality step increase, or "QSI." This not only moves you up to the next higher step immediately, but it will advance the date for all your future step increases. |
