Concerned about a co-worker? |
One of my co-workers is Nigerian (he is a US citizen). He is a nice guy but seems to have a homeland mentality instead of a western one. Also lacks social skills to some extent -at least it seems to me. Anyway, he is just about done with his Master's degree. We are grossly underpaid and under appreciated at the place we work at. Eventhough, I have my own problems with looking for a new job, I am worried about him finding a new job even with a Masters degree when he earns it. He has applied for jobs, specifically Public Relations jobs, but has been turned down. He says he need to find an internship, but at 35 I think its a bit late for one? Is there some kind of support group (employment focused) he can turn to for guidance?........etc......... He is located in the San Francisco, CA, Bay Area. Thanks. Suggest to him to visit the office of international affairs at his college where they maybe able to refer him to some program which will help him become able to deal with Americans better.. Can he work for the college? He might already be right where he's most comfortable, namely in a scholastic environment. Frankly I know far too many people (3rd, 4th+ generation Americans) who have jobs they hate or that are not in their chosen field just b/c they need A job. Or who are frantically searching for jobs. These are people with engineering, accounting etc. degrees. I'm sorry for your friend, it sucks for him, but it sucks for them too. Tell him to try naija4life, they may have support groups or contacts. |
