I have a relative working in the Civil service in the UK she is 60 next year does she have to retire? |
It's the prison service and she's worried that because she is coming up to legal retirement age that she will be given her cards ie as the end of her contract. She is aware that the age of retirement is due to be increased but is not sure what her legal status is. Should she be looking for a new job? Hello Robert! No...she does not have to retire. In the UK, women CAN retire at 60 but doesn't have to. With the enactment of recent age discrimination legislation, it has now become a subject of challenge whether an employer can forcibly retire people at 65! So no! She shouldn't look for another job...but if she isn't in a trade union...she should be!!!!!! Source(s): Trade Union Officer! Hi Only if she wants to with the equal opportunities now she can work on until she wants to- even after 65. BUT does she want to work that long??? Good luck yes if its a lady its 60 for men its 65 t No worries - women in the UK have the right to work until they are 65. i don't know if there are any exempt occupations, but if she is concerned, she should check with the DWP - they have a website. If they have the same rules as council workers, which is more than likely the case,she can carry on up to 65. |
