How do I break into a non-profit Development or ED position?

I've been fundraising for and/or running several political campaigns (Campaign Manager) and would like to get a position as a Director of Development or Executive Director for a non-profit. I'm having a hard time making the change even though I have a proven track record as a good fundraiser. I lost my last election ( it was a bitter federal one). Any hints on making the switch? I'm a new father and want a job that the security is based on my performance, not what a candidate said on the campain trail.

Get to know the local non-profit people. they need money. volunteer at first to fundraise/write a grant for them. the board will see your potential. get on the board. they all have to have them. then you will get to know the folks who are doing the hiring. it's a tough switch but it is do-able. you need to be creative because the market is competitive. Source(s): worked for/with/started non-profits for years.
