Jobs Corp?

I'm 17 years old, and I don't have enough credits to guaducate or be promoted to the Junior year. I'll be 18 in the new school year, and the high I'm going to won't accept me. Anyways, I want to Jobs Corp went through the tour, and I'm asking you whom heard or went to Jobs Corp: How did it go for you? Did you enjoy it? Great way to get you diapolma, etc. Give me every detail as you can! Thanks!

I have a 16 year old daughter that goes to Talking Leaves Job Corp here in Oklahoma. It is a very nice facility and has a self paced high school and GED program. They offer extra help and tutorials and are willing to help you in any way they can...the main purpose of joining Job Corp is to become an independent adult with a high school diploma, learn independent living skills, learn job skills and become ready for college if you choose to go. You are paid every two weeks but all your needs are met so it is extra spending money. Some of the Job Corps are nicer than others. Just go on a couple tours and see which one you like better. My 16 year old loves it and comes home on weekends. My 18 yeear old is planning on going for 6 months or so before starting college. She just graduated high school and wants to take the business class and earn the $1,200.00 that is given after graduating. Good luck!
It depends on the location. The one I went to was where the county was sending all their juvenile delinquents that were too young for the military. For anyone who CHOOSES to go there and had other opportunities (like I did), it was a miserable experience.
Speaking of the military, the JC recruiter lies more than a military recruiter. 99% of everything he told you was an absolute lie.
You'll get your GED. You'll be taught a trade. And that's about the limit to the truth.
What they don't tell you is that you can get your GED on your own. That you'll get the Billy Madison treatment before you take a single trade class. That the trade classes are about 10 years out of date. That you will not be allowed to leave the program until THEY get you a job. That their job placement is worthless. That the nurse's office is run by the nursing students, who don't feel particularly bound by privacy laws.
Did they show you the dorm you'll be living in? You won't be living in that dorm. Did they show you housing that you'd be living in? You won't be living in that housing. That dorm and housing are for you to see on your tour. The students who get to live there who have had the job placement fail them so utterly that they become staff.
That said, if you personally know someone who is a student there, is typical of that location's students, and is happy, then it might be good for you.
But if you're just going to get your diploma? Forget it. And if they promised to get you into college like they did me, stay FAR away.
Hello, well, I had a friend (she passed away from cancer at 31 in 1984) and she joined something called The California Conservation Corps. I'm not sure how different that is than Job Corps but she learnt how to do things like put out fires, had a hellish boot camp, and when I asked her why she wanted to do this, she said, "I just want to see if I can". She was the type of person to join Outward Bound. I think it's great you want to do this! Your parents did a great job! Good luck!
