I live in dallas tx and I want to volunteer. I want to gain some experience in management information system.? |
There are two reasons why I want to volunteer. !. Need a volunteering service that does lots of management information system activities or something related to it. 2. Trying to get a government job and those kinds of jobs usually look at the veterans or those who served in the military first. I don't want to join the military and i am not a vet...so what can i do so i can be at that level or close to it. My friend said volunteer for the police dept. or fire dept. Take two approaches. 1. Research opportunities at http://www.VolunteerMatch.org and http://www.Craigslist.org. 2. Call a few nonprofits you respect in the area and ask the appropriate leader if you can come visit for 15 minutes (information interview, although don't call it that). Get the information you need by asking a few key questions, then ending the meeting by asking if there is someone they know you should speak with. (This becomes a warm lead, i.e., "Hi Jim, Sherry over at XYZ nonprofit suggested that I call you." Better than having to keep making cold calls to get the information you need.) Note that smaller nonprofits will often give you more responsibility but fewer resources. Larger nonprofits will often give you more of a niche assignment -- and will often have better resources. There is value to both experiences. Take a bit of time to make an informed decision -- you'll feel better about it down the road. I am a IS Director for a non-profit in Tampa and always willing to take on volunteers for my department. Non-profit agencies are often limited in their funding, and with IT/IS positions paying usually much more than the non-profit director it is a challenge to find good people. Look up the non-profits in your area, especially the smaller ones (March of Dimes and the like usually have enough funding to have IT Staff). The plus side to this is you are helping a segment of the population so you are doing good for someone, and showing non-profits the importance of IT Systems in today's world may open their eyes to offering you a position with the agency. dont got a clue m8 |
