How do you find a fiscal agent to sponsor a new non profit organization?

I am very passionate about starting a non profit organization for victims of abusive family members. I will do this, but do not know the first thing about how to go about it. I did some research and learned that I can try to find a fiscal sponsor to help with the startup costs. I learned that I need to find one that is somewhat similar to the type I am starting. I don't know what that is or where to begin.

There's a difference between fiscal sponsors and sponsors. A fiscal sponsor is some group that already has a tax-deductible status and will let you use it when you get donations. You get the donations, the check is written to them, it's tax-deductible for the donor, and you get most of the money but not all of it, you pay a small percentage to the charity because they have to monitor the donations and do the paperwork. A sponsor underwrites your costs. I would STRONGLY suggest working for a similar nonprofit before starting your own, as you have a lot to learn. If you just want to help people, work for another group. Otherwise, you end up doing bookkeeping and running a newsletter and raising money and working with a board, and you never get to actually help people yourself. Much better to work with someone else. If you can't find a local group, ask the United Way for a referral, or ask the police which groups work on domestic violence locally and they'll refer you, or try working with a local church on this.
Watch to see which sponsors are doing for other non for profits of the same type. Call that other organization and ask who got that sponsorship and talk to that guy and ask.

Honestly, however, I think most get done because someone knows someone else in the big company.
Well, I live in Georgia. There is exactly what you are talking about here. It is called MUST ministries. Check out their websites they might help you out to extend their arm reaching out to help? Or, you could see who they got to help them start out. How they began. :)
