What is the first step to getting a job with the postal service?

Really, the first step, is there someone to call for the test or an application or what?

The first step is to go to www.usps.com click on jobs. It will take you to a page of positions and the test numbers. Click on one of them to see if the test is available. Since you wont have the announcement number it will have a link that says apply online. It will then take you to a page that has a map of the country. You choose your state and it will show you the list of tests that is open. Getting a job there has NOTHING to do with who you know since you have to take the test to have permanent employment. You can also visit your local post office. When they have vacancies they put up a job posting. To pass the test you need a 70 or higher. I recommend you get higher than a 70 since people with the highest scores get hired first. I got a 96 and was called in for an interview 2 months later and was hired on the spot. As for what the other person said you dont need to be a veteran to get a permanent job. If you get hired you have to pass your 90 day probation and then you are permanent. You get benefits after your first paycheck also. Dont know where that person gets you dont get benefits. The only people that dont get benefits are casuals and rural carriers. The carrier position pays more starting at 18 an hour. At least here in NJ it is that rate. Clerks get paid less. But like the other person said unless this is something you have wanted to do as a kid strive for something better,. The pay and benefits are good but the conditions and the management is the worst. I know Ive been there for 3 yrs. Im looking for something else now. But good luck to you.. Source(s): current usps employee
Getting any prestigious job has far more to do with WHO you know, rather than what you know.
Go to their web site: www.usps.com and look for a careers link. I think there is an on-line application to fill out then they will contact you. You can probably see on their site what areas are hiring. I live in LA California and I know they hire and train out of certain locations but then they will try to place you as close to your desired location.
The process may take some time depending on what part of the country your in, but working for the post office can be a great job!
My girlfriend has worked for USPS for about 20 years.
see if you qualify, then place an application...Then probably nothing..
Go to USAjobs.gov or the usps.com website

A lot of the companies out there advertising postal worker tests are frauds - they will ask you for $100-$300 and then you'll never hear from them again!

Always confirm this type of stuff with a phone call and check with your local Better Business Bureau to make sure it is legit!
