How do you start a non-profit orginization? |
How do you start a non-profit orginization? Decide on the product or service you'll provide. Decide on a name. Check the name with the County Register of Deeds to insure it's not being used. Create bylaws. Incorporate with your Secretary of State. Apply to IRS for an employer identification number (EIN) (over phone) Appy to IRS for 501(c) 3 nonprofit status. The other answer is good, especially the part about registering with the IRS. However, the real question is, why would you want to? Unless your idea is truly unique, which is rare, it's better to work with an already established group. Then you get to do the actual work, rather than having to do bookkeeping and finding donors. Additionally, you can work with a church and use their tax-deductible status and then just go to work helping people rather than filling out a lot of paperwork. |
