"Veterans wanna know: What all do I have to do to get a secret clearance? Is it hard?"?

Fiancially strapped vet recently unemployed, (used to work at Walter Reed in D.C. until the scandal broke in early Feb. and they fired my entire floor!!) wuld like to return to te federal govt now that I have taken a couple of credit courses in business. I have recently noticed that alot of federal announcements in my field require a 'secret clearance'.. .hey, exactly WHAT is a secret clearance, how do I get one, where do I get one, and what is it really for? .. Can you help?

secret is for sensitive positions....
If you have a clean background, it shouldn't be a problem. You'll fill out forms letting them know your past history, jobs, where you lived, and provide references (people who know you). Generally, you don't need the clearance in advance, apply to the job, and they'll start the background check process.
The term secret is only one designation of several all of which are assigned on a need to know basis. You can't study for them or earn them, they are bestowed relative to the requirements of the job description. If you are a Vet go to the VA and ask to see a counselor. You may be eligible for training and other benefits. They will guide you to jobs appropriate to your education and experience.
If you are accepted for a position by the federal government they will obtain the clearance for you. If you have had a clearance within the past five years they will do a "bring up" to make it current. It is not necessary for you to have the clearance to be hired; may help but it is usually not required before being hired.
