What is a contract mail person? |
My neighbor and I weren't getting our dvds by mail and we talked to the mail person, he said he didnt care and we were very upset with his answer. He told us he wasn't even a post office employee, said he was a contact mail handler. What is all this about, why didn't we get professional letter carriers. Why did we get a contact mail person. I've never heard of this before. He even ask us if we needed a job and that they don't even do background checks. So wheres my dvds and pay checks? How could the post office let this happen. Contract carriers are a way for the USPS to get rid of costs, like paying professionals. If you're interested in tracking the issue you can go to NALC.org and sign up for legislation alerts. Right now real Letter Carriers are jumping on the bandwagon to support H.R. 282 and S. 1457. I am particularly horrified that because of improper background checks a sex offender was allowed to get a contract route by having his 12 year old son sign the paperwork, since he legally can't! Source(s): I'm a USPS Letter Carrier, a Chief NALC Steward, and the moderator of http://groups.yahoo.com/group/postalwork... this is all part of the postal reform the public has been screaming for for years. are you happy now you got what you want. i'm a postal employee and i really thing the government will loose the security of the mail and loose more money threw contract carriers and other postal people. the p.o. is trying to save money by contracting out. ur right about the background check. they could be criminals delivering ur mail. they get paid low wages so they dont care if they get fired or they can just quit whenever they want. unlike city carriers (the pros) they care about their customers and they do have background checks....theres more businesses opening and more houses are being build so the p.o. cant keep up and instead of paying a professional letter carriers $20.00 an hour they prefer to get contract letter carriers which pay $7.50 an hour.(which like u said he dont care) and they dont...so what i would do on ur situation with the dvds and checks i would go get a p.o. box.....people should know about this cause it will be happening all over the country alot sooner than u think.... A contractor is an individual who works within a governmental agency, but in essence works for a private sector company that has a contract with the government. The individual is paid by the company...not the government. Contracting jobs has become extremely popular over the last ten years because the government can fill the necessary positions with less money spent. It's about cutting corners and saving a buck or two. As for your mail not arriving...contact your local post office to find the root cause. Someone has to be held liable. Ed is right on the money. Contract carriers have been instituted in 'new' delivery areas around the country. The carriers that are being hired receive no benefits, they have no long term interest in providing service, it is a losing situation for any customer who is serviced by one of them. You will probably not get any satisfaction contacting your local post office. They will tell you to contact the contact carrier. It would be a good idea to contact your Congressman and Senator about the issue. They are studying the situation in Congress now. |
