How and when did you decide to move on...? |
...when your career "hit the wall?" I am currently a permanent teleworker at my job at a NPO, working from home five days a week. My company provided the equipment, they pay for all the internet service (for now), and I make the most money I ever have since I began working in high school. And that's without having a college degree! Now here's the problem: I've been trying to take a step up, move into a position that offers a higher salary and more responsibility. But I've discovered that all the areas that I can get training in are already covered by co-workers, who might feel threatened if I started asking to work in their particular areas. Since our company encourages training and development, I've even consulted HR specialists at work, who've told me that my abilities exceed my job position, and that there's really nothing available to someone in my position w/o having a degree. So...do I go after a degree, or start shopping around for another job? Would a headhunter help me? Studies show having a college diploma is worth, on average, more than $1,000,000 in extra earnings compared to only graduating from high school. But, does Bill Gates have a college degree? NO! All things considered, I think your emphasis should be on getting a college degree first and foremost. It will open many, many more doors for you in the future. If you try to get ahead with only a high school diploma, your current HR Specialist will not be the last one to tell you your opportunities are limited. If you can or need to work at the same time as you pursue your college education, you can also keep looking to move up and improve yourself any way you can. Best of luck. |
